Background and Challenges
South Wales Police is the largest police force in Wales, serving 1.3 million people in an area of over 2,000 square kilometers, or 42% of the Welsh population, yet there was a huge challenge in their work, the 4G cellular solution they deployed could not achieve the connectivity they needed, and it was important to be able to work in a wide and varied area without having to return to the station. They needed a high-performance antenna to help them achieve connectivity in even the most remote areas, one that would not only help the devices connect, but also provide Wi-Fi hotspots around the vehicle.
The Solution
The 5G MiMo antenna has up to 11 independently fed antennas in a single dome housing with four isolated high performance antenna units that can cover 617-960/1710-6000MHz, while up to six optional dual-band elements cover 2.4 and 5.0/7.2GHz and support MiMo/diversity operation for Wi-Fi. And one of the optional high-performance GPS/GNSS antennas has an integrated 26dB gain low-noise amplifier and high-quality filtering to provide high-precision positioning.
Available in black or white, the 5G MiMo antenna features multiple antenna functions in one housing, along with a standard front-connector antenna connector, and a logo for connecting cables for easy cable identification and installation. The single-hole mount design reduces vehicle damage, installation time and cost, and can be mounted on metal or non-metallic panel surfaces for FirstNet (US) and SN (UK) public safety networks.
The 5G MiMo antenna is small and versatile, measuring 81mm in height, 180mm in width and weighing only 0.9kg, and can be used in police and law enforcement, EMS and firefighting, public transportation buses and coaches, and utility vehicles.
Application Outlook
The 5G MiMo antenna can be used as part of a router to help solve connectivity issues and can provide signal coverage in remote areas. For the South Wales Police, this can help to dramatically reduce working hours and improve efficiency, as well as upload and update information outside the vehicle, enabling communication with the system outside the vehicle and providing much needed connectivity while on the job.
The stable connectivity brought by the 5G MiMo antenna will not only enable more efficient work for public safety and transportation, but will also open up greater possibilities for the future application of technologies such as facial recognition.
